Who knew Twilight's fanggirls would sink their teeth so heartily into the vampire saga's DVD release?
Oh, right. Everyone.
The Robert Pattinson adulators were out in full force Saturday for the highly anticipated midnight launch of the film's home video release, buying up more than 3 million copies of the special-edition double-disc on its first day alone. The Top 9 Hottest Vampires Not in Twilight
In addition to silencing any Twilight-fatigued critics, the overwhelming sales haul helped the film enter the record books as one of the top five best first-day DVD releases in the past two years, joining the esteemed company of fellow blockbusters Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Transformers.
Que Bella.
"We are incredibly appreciative that Twilight fans came out to once again support this film at our midnight events across the nation," said Summit Home Entertainment President Steve Nickerson.
"With such a successful first-day sales, it is apparent that our fans remain passionate about the Twilight saga and want to own a piece of the Edward and Bella story they have come to love."
Doing all they could to add to the launch-day buzz, Summit strategically dispatched castmembers to surprise purchase-happy fans at retail locations across the country for the DVD debut, an event dubbed "Twilight at Midnight." source

First Catherine Hardwicke was out as director of the popular Twilight series once Chris Weitz was announced as her replacement. An unknown Spanish director will be making his English language debut with the third installment. What will the Twilight fans think about the new director who will need and endorsement from Stephenie Meyer?
Summit,
which had no comment Wednesday, is expected to make the official
announcement soon. The minimajor recently gave "Eclipse" a release date
of June 30, 2010.
Bayona's a protege of Guillermo Del Toro. He directed the Spanish-language horror-thriller "The Orphanage," which was exec produced by Del Toro, and is attached to helm the Universal thriller "Hater," with Del Toro and Mark Johnson producing.
Summit's opted for a different director on each "Twilight" pic. Chris Weitz replaced "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke on "New Moon." Production's due to start shortly on "New Moon" with the key thesps -- Robert Pattinson as Edward, Kristen Stewart as Bella and Taylor Lautner as Jacob -- reprising their roles.
"New Moon" is set to open Nov. 20. Melissa Rosenberg,
who penned the "Twilight" and "New Moon" scripts, is working on
"Eclipse," in which Bella is forced to choose between Edward and Jacob.
The four books in Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series have sold more
than 17 million copies worldwide.[VARIETY]
Diehard Twilight Fans waited in rainy weather to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars from the popular movie series. Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner signed autographs for fans at the Japanese premiere at Ebisu Garden Place on February 27, 2009 in Tokyo, Japan. It was great to see young hottie Taylor Lautner at the Japanese premiere after he almost got kicked out and replaced in the next two films from the Twilight series. Fans campaigned to help Taylor keep his role as Jacob Black in the "New Moon" teen vampire series. The film will open to the public on April 4 in Japan.

What do you think about RPatz's new shorter haircut? Twilight's leading man cut his sexy hair and cleans up pretty good. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Drew Barrymore may be a candidate to direct the third film in the Twilight series. Are they really serious or is the studio trying to cover themselves after there was backlash when female director Catherine Hardwicke was fired? Drew Barrymore is an ok actress but she seems like a wrong match for the film's dark tone. The 34-year-old recently wrapped her directorial debut "Whip It!" -- a
dramedy about an indie-rock misfit who discovers a nearby roller derby
-- and stars Drew, Ellen Page and Jimmy Fallon "Eclipse" is scheduled to be in theatres June 30, 2010.
As Summit Entertainment looks to lock in a director for the third installment of the Twilight series, Eclipse, the company is talking to a select group of directors -- including actress-turned-helmer Drew Barrymore, EW has learned. While this news may come as a surprise to some, Barrymore did just finish work on her directorial debut, Whip It! starring Ellen Page. Neither Summit nor Barrymore's reps would comment for this story. source
Twilight novelist Stephenie Meyer wrote an open letter to fans after many weren't happy with Catherine being fired.
Hey guys,
There's been a lot of worry and speculation on the boards lately, and I want to let you know what's going on.
First of all, like you, I'm sad that Catherine is not continuing on with us for New Moon. I'm going to miss her, not just as a brilliant director, but also as a friend. She has such a distinct, authentic voice that did amazing things for Twilight. I'm looking forward to every movie she does in the future.
And she didn't leave us empty handed. We still get the benefits of her amazing casting and the beautiful visual world she created. This foundation puts us in a good place for New Moon.
Summit Films is moving forward with a new director for New Moon. They've asked Chris Weitz, director of American Pie, About a Boy, and The Golden Compass, to join us, and I am very pleased to announce that he's agreed to be a part of our Twilight world. I've had the chance to talk to Chris, and I can tell you that he is excited by the story and eager to keep the movie as close to the book as possible. He is also very aware of you, the fans, and wants to keep you all extremely happy. (Torches and pitchforks are not going to be necessary.)
I'm excited to work with Chris and I think he brings a lot to the table, not the least of which for me is that he wrote the screenplay for and directed one of my favorite movies of all time, About a Boy. I'm really looking forward to seeing his vision for New Moon.
Below is a letter from Chris to you. I think you'll get a glimpse in this note of how cool it's going to be having Chris as part of our community.
Watch a fan video to learn more about the New Moon Campaign. Hopefully everything will work out for Taylor Lautner who may lose his job as Jacob in the popular series for being too small.
HELP ME SAVE NEW MOON!
Summit Entertainment, LLC 1630 Stewart Street, Suite 120 Santa Monica, California 90404 Atten: Twilight Saga Concerns
He's accepted Summit Entertainment's offer to direct the movie adaptation of the second book in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series of vampire novels, New Moon. (I first broke the news that Weitz had received the offer here, and the news that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke was off the sequel here.) The offer went out to director Chris Weitz in part because he's a longtime pal of Summit's president of production. Now comes a letter that the director will be sending to Twilight fans (below) with his selection endorsed by Stephenie Meyer (below that). Fan approval is very important to Weitz, who initially resigned from directing The Golden Compass, also based on a popular book, because he feared getting dissed by devotees. Despite that, Summit has put its first valuable franchise in his hands. Weitz has successfully worked with tweens and teens in About A Boy as director and writer, and in American Pie as producer and uncredited director. I'm told Summit wanted Weitz because the studio liked the look of The Golden Compass (he was writer and director) even if it didn't heat up the domestic box office. Here's the Weitz letter to fans:
I'm not saying Weitz is a bad choice, even if I happen to be a bigger fan of his brother Paul Weitz's films, which seem more quirky and personal (Paul did "In Good Company" and "American Dreamz"). But Chris is a talented writer-director and, having shepherded "Golden Compass" to worldwide box-office success, clearly can handle the popularization of a franchise property. But what's fascinating, for the moment, is how Chris handled his first big assignment--reaching out and reassuring "Twilight" fans who were upset over Hardwicke's sudden departure, wanted a woman director to get the gig, or crave a absolutely faithful translation of the remaining books in the series, starting with "New Moon," which Summit hopes to have in theaters by the end of next year.
So here are a few excerpts from what Chris said in his letter to fans--and what it really means:
What he said: "In the past few days I have been involved in a whirlwind romance with Stephenie Meyer's extraordinary books."
What it means: "It's amazing how fast Amazon can rush an overnight shipment of books to your house."
What he said: "I am very grateful to have received [Stephenie's] permission to protect 'New Moon' in its translation from the page to the screen."
What it means: "I passed the audition."
What he said: "For the last decade of my career as a director, I have chosen to make adaptations of complex and involved works of literature."
What it means: "I barely remember being that smart-aleck brat who did all the semen jokes and sexist gags in 'American Pie.' "
What he said: "When I saw the film of 'Twilight' ... I was struck by the extraordinary passion for the characters, story and theme that was evident in the people sitting in the seats around me."
What it means: "I saw the film in a real movie theater, not in my agent's screening room."
What he said: "Like many of you, I am a fan of Catherine Hardwicke's work. I can't really say much about why she is not doing 'New Moon' because I wasn't involved in those decisions."
What it means: "Don't blame me for her getting the ax. It was those guys over there that fired her."
What he said: "To those of who doubt that as a male director I can capture Bella's experience, I can only say that emotion is universal...."
What it means: "It's not like they hired Michael Bay, OK?"
What he said: "... and my work has often involved working with some of the most talented actresses in the world."
What it means: "By saying 'some of' we're obviously not counting Tara Reid." source

Thousands of screaming teenage girls braved the freezing cold for the premiere of vampire love story Twilight.
The
stars of the film Robert Pattinson, 22, and Kristen Stewart, 18, walked
a black carpet blasted with dry ice for atmosphere in London's
Leicester Square.
The film is based on the first novel in
Stephanie Meyer's series about high school girl Bella Swann who falls
in love with vampire Edward.
In its first weekend at US cinemas Twilight outsold new James Bond film Quantum of Solace and High School Musical 3.
Director
Catherine Hardwicke said: "We love London even though it's so cold.
These fans are braver because they're out here and it's freezing so
they are heartier souls."
Harry Potter star Robert said of his
hysterical fans: "It's absolutely mad. I'm in a daze. They're here for
the character, not for me. I don't know what to do. I'm terrified of
doing the sequel."
Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella, claims some
feminist groups disapproved of her character falling for a dominant
vampire. She said: "It's a love story about two people who would die
for each other. Bella has very innately female qualities, she really
trusts herself. It takes a really strong person to subject themselves
to that. source

A wildly popular vampire love story bit into the box office with a vengeance, helping to deliver a banner weekend for the industry as Hollywood brushed off one of the worst weeks ever on Wall Street.
" Twilight," the film that drew scores of fans of Stephenie Meyer's vampire book series, delivered on the advance hype, generating $70.5 million in domestic box office receipts during its opening weekend, marking the fourth best November opening weekend of all time.
That's an extraordinary result for an independently produced film that cost just $37 million to make and was passed over by Paramount's MTV Films. ndeed, Hollywood was confounded by the popularity of the film, which tells the story of a "Romeo & Juliet" type romance between a mortal and a vampire. Estimates of the movie's opening had ranged wildly from $35 million to $60 million.
"This certainly exceeded our expectations by a great deal," said Richie Fay, president of domestic distribution for Summit Entertainment. "The fan base was huge." Summit is a new independent distributor and finance company that until recently had struggled to establish its footing in Hollywood but now has plenty of bragging rights.
"Twilight" contributed to a strong weekend at the box office, where revenues have been running slightly ahead of last year. The top 12 films grossed $137.6 million, up 16% over the same weekend a year ago, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media by Numbers.
"This is another example of how the economy has not slowed people at all from going to watch movies," he said. "We're set up to have one of the biggest Thanksgiving weekends ever." source
Summit Entertainment's low cost blockbuster Twilight opened huge as expected because of heavy pre-sales with $35.8M Friday. But the front-loaded pic dropped a big but expected 41% to $21M Saturday. (Similarly front loaded Sex And The City also had a big Friday to Saturday fall...)With an estimated $13.6M Sunday from 3,419 theaters, including $7M worth of Thursday midnight shows, Twilight will end up with $70.5M for its first North American weekend in release. Exit polling showed audiences were 75%/25% female to male, and 55%/25% under or over the age of 25. Fangirls -- or should I say fang-girls -- were buying 5 Twilight tickets per second as of early Friday morning, making it online ticket-seller Fandango's fastest-selling film since The Dark Knight last July. Then the tween and teen females in store bought or homemade Twilight clothes (and even Twilight tattoos) flocked to the first Big Screen version of Stephenie Meyer's bestselling series of Romeo & Juliet-style vampire romance books. Yet the movie adaptation by Melissa Rosenberg was made by start-up studio Summit for only $37M. This will be the start of a big new franchise since a sequel is already in the works -- New Moon, based on Meyer's second book in the series. The first box office records have already been broken by Twilight's girl power. This is the biggest opening for a female director. Catherine Hardwicke is easily beating Mimi Leder's $41.1M for 1998's Deep Impact. source
