Jay
Leno taped his final Tonight show episode on Friday. The talk show host
is moving to an earlier slot on the network to host a chat show at 10
pm. Watch highlights from the episode if you missed it.
The king of late-night television stepped down from his throne last night with tears in his eyes.
Jay Leno, who took over "The Tonight Show" in 1992 from Johnny
Carson, passed the torch to Conan O'Brien after 3,800 performances.
Thanking those who helped make "this show the No. 1 show," the
59-year-old fixture in America's homes for 17 years managed to smile
even as his eyes welled.
He'll stay with NBC, hosting a new, five-times-a-week primetime show in an earlier 10 p.m. slot in the fall.
Leno's finale opened with a standing ovation from the audience and a monologue targeting politicians and other favorites.
"Seventeen years," he began. "I want to thank all the people who
made it possible. Michael Jackson, Monica Lewinsky, Bill Clinton. We
could not have done this show without them."
The audience was still laughing when he recalled, "When I started my hair was black, and the President was white."
He followed with a favorite target over the years: "I'm almost
embarrassed to mention this. I'm cleaning out my office today, I find
O.J.'s knife. I had it the whole time."
About the future, he said, "People ask me, 'Oh, what are you going
to do after the last show? Are you gonna go on vacation?' This kind of
thing. ... I'm going to a secluded spot where no one can find me: NBC
prime time."
But at the end, Leno turned serious as the camera panned to his wife
in the audience, saying, "One of the things I'm proud of, I'm leaving
this dance with the same girl I came in with." [NYDN]
The
Scottish singer is said to have began swearing angrily after Morgan
told told 12-year-old Shaheen Jafargholi his had been 'the best singing
performance we have heard in the semi-finals so far'.
Watching the show the hotel's bar, Boyle is accused of sticking two
fingers up at a television and shouting 'f*** off', before stomping off
to her room.
The BGT finalist was involved in an earlier foul-mouthed outburst
outside the Wembley Plaza Hotel. Boyle's spokesman said she lost her
temper after being 'wound up' by two strangers. Photographs of the
singer show her involved in a heated discussion with police officers
outside the hotel. [HUFFINGTON POST]
Despite her immense popularity, overwhelming favorite and Internet
phenomenon Susan Boyle came in second to dance group Diversity in the
"Britain's Got Talent" television contest on Saturday.
Boyle, 48, had been expected to triumph after her performance in
April of "I Dreamed a Dream" catapulted her to international
superstardom.
She sang the same song in Saturday's final, but rousing though the
performance was, it was not enough to trump the outsiders Diversity who
won by public vote.
The 10-member troupe from Essex, England and London receives 100,000
pounds ($160,000) and will perform at the Royal Variety Performance in
front of the Queen.
Boyle, an unemployed church volunteer who joked she had never been
kissed and has been described by newspapers as "frumpy" and a "hairy
angel", was the antithesis of what many people believed made a
celebrity.
Clips of the April show were downloaded more than 150 million times
on the Internet, films crews camped outside her home in a small town in
Scotland and tabloid reporters have followed her every move.
Boyle appeared on U.S. chat shows hosted by Oprah Winfrey and Larry
King, but it was not enough to win the show. She came second, and
saxophonist Julian Smith was third. [LA TIMES]
Adam Lambert says role models come in a variety of different forms – even in eye makeup, fingernail polish and tight pants.
"It's a really, really cool thing," the American Idol runner-up
says, "to be able to show people that you can be yourself, and you
should be proud of yourself, and you should own who you are and what
you're about, and never make apologies for it."
So to those who speculate about his sexuality, he has a message. "Calm down," he says, and "keep speculating." [PEOPLE]
"American Idol" ended its eighth season last week. So what will fans
do with all this newfound free time? Why, delve into another "Idol"
voting controversy, of course.
Published reports have raised questions whether AT&T, a program
sponsor, may have violated "Idol" voting rules at two pre-finale
parties thrown for Kris Allen, the Arkansas crooner crowned winner last
Wednesday. Partisans of Adam Lambert, the runner-up, have generated
stormy online protests about alleged voting improprieties that could
have thrown the outcome.
AT&T confirmed that its employees handed out phones to party
guests in Arkansas and then offered pointers on how to text votes. The
reports said the workers also briefed guests on how to "power-text"
multiple votes at once, which would have been a violation of "Idol's"
rules.
The fracas has embarrassed AT&T, which has for years gotten
repeated shout-outs from "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest in exchange for its
paid sponsorship.
In a statement, the company said its workers were "caught up in the
enthusiasm of rooting for their hometown contestant." It added: "Going
forward, we will make sure our employees understand our sponsorship
celebrates the competition, not individual contestants."
The producers, meanwhile, are defending the integrity of the voting
process. "Fox and the producers of 'American Idol' are absolutely
certain that the results of this competition are fair, accurate and
verified," the network and producers said in a joint statement
Wednesday. "Kris Allen is, without a doubt, the American Idol. We have
an independent third-party monitoring procedure in place to ensure the
integrity of the voting process. In no way did any individuals unfairly
influence the outcome of the competition."
On that point, the producers seem to be on firm ground. According to
a network spokeswoman, more than 100 million votes were received after
the May 19 final performance between Allen and Lambert. Even if the
AT&T workers passed out 1,000 phones -- the company said it was "a
small number" of devices, without offering specifics -- and coached
each user to text 100 votes, that would add up to only 100,000 votes,
or less than one-tenth of 1% of the votes cast.
Yet the murkiness surrounding the phone-in voting procedures all but
guarantee conspiracy theories, especially given "Idol's" status as
America's No. 1 show. Fox has never released more than bare-bones data
about the tabulation process, which is managed by Los Angeles firm
Telescope.
Fox says that it needs to keep the voting details secret to avoid
helping any viewers who might attempt to game the system. The producers
have also refused to release voting tallies for the contestants.
Ostensibly, this is to sustain drama even during seasons when the
results are lopsided throughout the season. But "Idol" has generally
not provided such data even after the season has ended. [LA TIMES]
The CW has announced the renewed shows returning next season. However, The Game and Everybody Hates Chris which both have predominately African-American casts were both canceled. The Game tried to avoid the inevitable axe but staging a "Change the Game Campaign." The cast members posted a Youtube video claiming over and over again that the Game was not canceled. The cast asked fans to blog on the CW message boards to generate a million hits on the CW website. Hosea Chanchez and Pooch Hall were spotted at the Def Jam 25th anniversary party at 40/40.
The campaign didn't work because the CW is adding another season of "One Tree Hill" and a new craptacular Gossip Girl spinoff to their schedule. We must also mention that The Game and Chris fans are not happy about the CW decision to cancels these shows. The Black blogosphere is pretty peeved about the CW. This is what Angel Laws at Concreteloop had to say. We've got to co-sign on this one.
For the record, I won’t be watching the LAME-ASS CW ever again, nor promoting any of their current or upcoming shows on Concrete Loop. They never promoted The Game or Everybody Hates Chris as much as Gossip Girl or 90210. And don’t get me started on One Tree Hill, that show is beyond garbage but always gets picked up every season. I guess picking up Tyra’s show (America’s Next Top Model) meets their black quota for the season. And don’t get me started on Girlfriends, y’all saw how they did that show. [CONCRETELOOP]
Last year, The CW decided to bid farewell to the WWE, resulting in a scramble to fill what had been its highest rated night. Out of that came the move of Everybody Hates Chris and The Game to Friday nights from their previous Sunday time slot (a night that is now officially in the graveyard for The CW). The move to Friday actually resulted in a nice increase in ratings for both shows over their terrible Sunday performances, but it was not enough, so Everybody Hates Chris and The Game have been cancelled. This leaves just America’s Next Top Model as the sole survivor from UPN. [source]
Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes is not giving any clues away during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. If you tuned in to the two hour season finale of Grey's Anatomy then you saw the cliffhanger showing that doctors Izzy Stevens and George O'Malley may be dead next season. Read the episode re-cap warning spoiler alert.
“Grey’s Anatomy” ended Thursday night with two characters’ lives in jeopardy. Viewers will have to wait until next season to see if Izzie Stevens and George O’Malley are alive.
Izzie, who suffered a brain tumor this season, underwent a risky surgery that threatened to take away her memory. Prior to the surgery, she told new husband Alex Karev she wanted to put a do not resuscitate order in place if anything went wrong. Izzie came out of the surgery and suffered short-term memory problems, which eventually disappeared. As she hugged Karev to celebrate gaining memory, she lost consciousness. Despite the DNR she requested, Karev urged doctors to try to resuscitate her and they did.
George, meanwhile, was inspired early in the two-hour episode to become an Army doctor. Later, friends planned to change his mind with an intervention. In the meantime, they operated on a dramatically wounded John Doe, who was bloody and near death after literally sweeping a woman off her feet to save her from an approaching bus. As Dr. Meredith Gray prepared to operate on the mysterious hero, he drew a “007″ into her palm. With that, she realized with horror that John Doe, tragically, was George.
The two-hour show ended Thursday with the doctors at Seattle Grace Hospital scrambling to save both lives. Izzie entered a flashback in which she stepped inside an elevator. The elevator doors opened and she was greeted by George in his Army uniform. [source]
Katherine Heigl who play's doctor Izzy has publicly expressed her unhappiness with the writing of her role last year when she withdrew her name from Emmy Awards consideration. Katherine had also said she wanted to pursue movie roles full time. The result of Katherine's public complaints about her chararcter is a terminal diagnosis of brain cancer. There is industry buzz that Katherine Heigl's performance this season may earn her an Emmy.
The Grey's Anatomy creator and executive producer spoke to Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly about all these issues and much more, including the "ghost sex" controversy, Katherine Heigl's Emmy chances, and T.R. Knight's alleged unhappiness.
Here's the text of EW's interview with Shonda ...
EW: Rumors have been swirling all year that Katherine and TR wanted off the show. The season ends with both their characters' lives hanging in the balance. Purely coincidental?
Shonda Rhimes: I don't think there are any coincidences. I think Katherine's stated publicly that she's happy to stay. I think that there have been lots of rumors about T.R., but T.R.'s never said anything. Take from it what you will.
EW: This kind of cliffhanger almost seems tailor-made to capitalize on some of those headlines and generate buzz.
Shonda Rhimes: You have to remember, I have two shows. It's not as if I spend a lot of time reading the press. We talk about stuff in the writers ' room that other people have read, but, mostly, we were really moving on character. Every year at the beginning of the season I pitch what the end of the season is going to be. And I literally sat down and pitched the last 10 minutes of this season at the beginning of the season, so we were headed towards the place that we knew we were going to go.
EW: Do you know which one of them lives and which one of them dies?
Shonda Rhimes: Yes. And I don't know that you should be saying "which one of them lives and which one of them dies." I know what happens to the characters.
EW: Have you shared this information with Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight?
Shonda Rhimes: [Crickets, then...] I don't want to answer that. I don't want to talk about my private conversations with the actors.
EW: Katherine said in a recent interview that she was as much in the dark about Izzie's fate as anyone. Do you keep this stuff close to the vest in order to prevent leaks?
Shonda Rhimes: There was a joke for a while there that if I got hit by a bus [no one would] know how to end the season. I do feel like a secret's not a secret if anybody knows about it. It was really about trying to keep the storyline as secret as possible, because I wanted the last moment of the season to be a real surprise.
EW: Did T.R. ask to be released from his contract?
Shonda Rhimes: I absolutely am not going to talk about any private conversations I had with the actors. I feel like that invades their privacy.
EW: Why haven't we seen very much of George this season? I understand that there are ebbs and flows on ensemble dramas but…
Shonda Rhimes: There are ebbs and flows. Every character this season has had a lot of ebbs and flows. And every season is shaped differently. With George, I really wanted you to not notice that he wasn't there for most of this episode. I don't think anybody noticed because of the way we laid it out this season. He's an incredibly talented actor. And, actually, he was really lovely and elegant about lying there in all that very painful makeup and prosthetics for much of the episode with no words. That moment where he grabs Meredith's hand is one of the most affecting moments of the episode, and it was without words. [source]
Congrats to ANTM winner Teyona Anderson and all of this season's finalists on ANTM cycle 12.
Teyona Anderson, 20, of Woodstown, N.J., a
self-described “country girl” is the winner of “America’s Next Top
Model” cycle 12. She won over Allison Harvard, 20, of New Orleans, and
third place contestant Aminat Ayinde, 21, of Union, N.J.
Teyona
now has a contract with Elite Model Management, a six page spread and a
cover of Seventeen magazine and $100,000 contract with Cover Girl
cosmetics.
FINAL THREE
1. Teyona Anderson, 20, Woodstown, N.J.
2. Allison Harvard, 20, New Orleans, La.
3. Aminat Ayinde, 21, Union, N.J.
Teyona
has a striking modelish look and a beautiful smile. She’ll make a good
“Top Model” … as long as she doesn’t have to do a commercial. (Then
again, she outwalked last season’s winner, McKey, at the fashion show,
so everyone has their strengths and weaknesses).
Somewhere
along the way this cycle turned into one of the weakest I’ve ever seen.
All of my favorites, from London to Fo, Celia to Allison and even
Aminat were let go one by one in favor of someone who just doesn’t seem
to have that “wow” factor.
I would've preferred an Aminat/Allison final. Then either one of them would've been a good winner.
But Teyona has taken consistently great photos and as Miss J. said, she seemed to want it more than Allison.
And who wasn’t worried that Allison with her creepy doll face, wouldn’t freak out in her commercials and shoots, etc.?
Allison's not the catwalk type and she tends to have that “one look” issue.
But I wanted her to win – at least, over Teyona. She’s more arresting and, to me, more memorable.
As
I wrote in my first recap of this season – when Allison won the first
photo challenge – she’s Christina Ricci in “The Addams Family” but
blonde with sharper, more delicate features. And obsessed with
nosebleeds and hemophilia. She remains “America’s Next Creepiest Model.” [source]
Britain's Got Talent contestant and Youtube singing sensation,Susan Boyle, appeared on Monday's episode of Oprah. Susan Boyle's video has earned over 120 million views on youtube.
American audiences tuned in and were "gobsmacked" by Susan Boyle's talking which was translated by subtitles. Susan Boyle admits that she used to be frumpy and has had a makeover.
Over 20 million viewers tuned in to watch one of the biggest moments in Susan Boyle's meteoric rise to stardom when she was a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show. It took subtitles to help the American audience understand what the Scotland native was saying, however.
As the church volunteer with the extraordinary voice showed American viewers around the West Lothian council house she shares with her cat Pebbles, a rolling script 'translated' her strong Scottish accent. "Welcome to my home. I have been born and raised here for the past 48 years," she explained in the initial, pre-recorded clip. "I was the youngest of nine, so it used to be quite hectic. My mother used to sing to us a lot, especially when she was working, so it's a sort of habit I picked up from her."
Susan went on to describe how singing helped boost her confidence at school and had also helped her get over the death of her mother two years ago. "After that there was a wee period where I didn't sing," she revealed. "You try and keep going through the pain. And that's what I try and do with the singing."
Susan then chatted to Oprah and Simon Cowell via a live satellite link up, with Oprah asking Susan whether she's lonely. "On no, I am not lonely," replied the 48-year-old. "Everyone has been so nice. I've got millions of friends now." The Scottish singer said she's enjoying every minute of her new-found celebrity. "It's like a dream come true," she admitted.
She also played down the changes she's made to her appearance, telling Oprah: "I've just tidied up, like any woman would."
Simon took the opportunity to reassure the Britain's Got Talent contestant she doesn't need a Hollywood-style makeover. "It's all about you and your singing voice now. Whatever you feel comfortable with, you do."
He also spoke about his shock at hearing Susan's voice for the first time, when she sang I Dreamed A Dream from musical Les Miserables in her audition.
"This lady came up and I'm thinking, 'This will take five seconds and I can go and have a cup of tea'," he revealed. "She knew she had something and I think she knew we were going to get that reaction. Just to see that look of satisfaction on her face mid-way through, which is, 'I'm winning now'. It was one of my favourite moments." [HELLO]
