Cary Joji Fukunaga's impressive directorial debut "Sin Nombre" earned the NYU Film School grad top awards for directing and cinematography at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. The film tells the story of Honduran teenager Sayra (Gaitan) who reunites with her father, an opportunity for her to potentially realize her dream of a life in the U.S. Moving to Mexico is the first step in a fateful journey of unexpected events.This gritty story of immigration shows the realism of border crossings, gang life and the battle between good and evil .

Edgar Flores — ever heard of him? No? Me either. Before I watched Sin Nombre, a gut-churning drama of migrant hopes and gangland horrors in the south of Mexico, I wouldn’t have known him from a door post. Apparently his only previous credit is a Honduran miniseries called Diferentes a Todos, but I’m afraid to say I missed that one. The good news is I won’t forget him after Sin Nombre, in which he plays a tough guy with a tender middle and a revelatory gift for suffering. In one critical scene, after one game-changing moment, so many types of pain crowd for attention on his face — shock, grief, rage, grim acceptance and resolve — that he seems to be channeling an entire master class in the psychology of loss. As for the rest of the movie, it’s a difficult, shattering work — raw and realistic in most ways, soapy and romantic in others. The rawness and realism far outweigh the sentimentality, so don’t go looking for a Slumdog Millionaire fairy tale. Instead, expect an assured feature debut from a young American filmmaker with an eye for gritty mise-en-scènes and a feel for the unlikely rhythms of redemption.
While you’re at it, you might also want to prepare yourself for several graphic whoppers. The violence is not to be minimized.
The perpetrators belong to La Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), a gang that started in Los Angeles and spread to Latin America and other major American cities, including Houston. Writer-director Cary Joji Fukunaga walks us through the blood, the ugliness and the tattooed complexity of La Mara with a boldness that snagged this year’s directing award at Sundance. (Adriano Goldman’s arresting lenswork won for cinematography.)
The film has its weak points — confusing transitions, mostly — but from the moment Casper (Flores) brings a kid named Benito (Kristyan Ferrer) to meet leader Lil’ Mago (Tenoch Huerta), we know we’re in for powerful stuff. Nicknamed Smiley, Benito is initiated with a beating and a hug. His next job is to kill an enemy “Chavala” with a makeshift pipe gun. The man pleads for his life. Mago says he’ll feed him to the dogs. Boom: Smiley pops him, his boyish hand steadied by Casper’s. Cut to the bucket of dog slop.
There’s more to it than carnage. Sin Nombre also tells the story of Sayra (Paulina Gaitan), her father (Gerardo Taracena) and uncle (Guillermo Villegas), three Hondurans working their way north by train — or train top — in the hopes of reaching America. The film’s turning point occurs on the roof of a boxcar, crowded with immigrants, as Casper arrives with Smiley and Mago. [source]
