Though this year's Academy Award nominations are dominated by The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the SAGs failed to recognize the film. Doubt, which was shut out of the Oscar's Best Picture category, led the SAG nominations with five nods and scored Streep a Best Actress win. The visibly shocked actress joked, "I didn't even buy a dress!" as she stepped away from the podium during her acceptance speech to model her black pantsuit.

Milk's Sean Penn walked away with the award for Best Leading Male, while the cast of Slumdog Millionaire scored the award for Best Ensemble. Accepting the award on behalf of the cast, actor Anil Kapoor dedicated it to the film's youngest stars, saying, "They deserve this award. They set our performances, not us. So this is on behalf of the children."

Unlike other award shows, which also honour behind-the-scenes work and technical achievements, the SAGs only hand out hardware to actors, making it one of the most star-studded award shows to watch.

James Earl Jones received a Life Achievement Award and used his acceptance speech to honour a previous recipient of the award, saying, "In this gathering of gifted artists, I would like to raise a salute: Paul Newman, somebody down here likes you."

The Dark Knight's Heath Ledger received his much-anticipated posthumous win for Best Supporting Actor, which costar Gary Oldman accepted.

The SAG Awards, voted on by the 120,000-strong actors' union, also honours television performances. 30 Rock continued its winning streak, taking home the awards for Best Actress (Tina Fey), Best Actor (Alec Baldwin) and Best Ensemble Comedy Cast. In the drama category, Mad Men won the Best Ensemble Cast award, but lead actor Jon Hamm lost to House's Hugh Laurie.
