Gold Medal winning Olympic Champion swimmer Michael Phelps says he's sorry that he got caught in a compromising photo smoking weed.  UK tabloid News of the World broke the photo and story of Phelps inhaling marijuana from a glass bong at a college house party. NOTW got a first hand account from a college student who was at the party. Michael Phelps' squeaky clean image and career is starting to go up in smoke.  Phelps took his Las Vegas exotic dancer/cocktail waitress girlfriend home for the holidays.

And after sporting chiefs announced laws which mean four-year bans for drug-taking, Phelps’ dreams of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London could already be OVER.

Those dreams seemed the last thing on his mind when he puffed from the bong during two days of partying with students last November, a quiet time in the swimming calendar when athletes would not expect to get tested for drugs.

One party-goer who witnessed the star’s behaviour told the News of the World: “He was out of control from the moment he got there.

“If he continues to party like that I’d be amazed if he ever won any more medals again.”

Phelps’ aides went into a panic over our story and offered us a raft of extraordinary incentives not to run the bong picture.

It was on November 6, weeks after his Beijing triumph, that 23-year-old Phelps surprised students at the University Of South Carolina in Columbia by showing up unannounced at a house party.

He was visiting Jordan Matthews, a girl he was secretly seeing who was a student there.

There are rumors that Phelps is playing the field and romantically linked to model Lily Donaldson and Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard.

When it comes to Michael Phelps, Lindsay Lohan is apparently willing to postpone this whole lesbian thing. While interviewing Michael's mom Debbie on Monday, Hobbit-like Access Hollywood correspondent Billy Bush received a text message from Lohan, which he proceeded to show Debbie while on the air. Mom's reaction was pretty great.

Lohan's message: "Tell him he's f*cking amazing, and I want to meet him."

It made them all stronger -- which came in handy when Billy showed Mama a text to her son from actress Lindsay Lohan. Billy handed his Blackberry to Mama for her to read Lindsay's message to Michael, and her reaction was priceless.

Michael Phelps is breaking records in the Beijing Olympics and just won his 7th Gold medal in the 100m butterfly against Milorad Cavic. Watch Phelps vs. Cavic.

Seeing wasn't believing. It took technology to confirm Michael Phelps won his seventh Olympic gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly with a finish so close it fooled the human eye.

Anyone watching in the jammed-to-the-rafters Water Cube or on television thought Milorad Cavic of Serbia had pulled a monumental upset Saturday morning, spoiling Phelps' chance at breaking Mark Spitz's vaunted record of seven golds in a single games.

The Serb did, too.

"It was kind of hard to see," Cavic said. "I know I had a long finish and Michael Phelps had a short finish."

Even Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, was in doubt.

"I wasn't sure he was going to get there," Bowman said.

Phelps — and everyone else — only knew he'd won by checking the scoreboard, where a "1" appeared by his name and a "2" by Cavic. They were separated by a hundredth of a second — the smallest margin measured in swimming.

It was so close and impossible to detect on regular-speed replays that the Serbian delegation filed a protest, triggering video and timing reviews down to the 10-thousandth of a second by FINA, swimming's world governing body.

"It was very clear that the Serbian swimmer touched second after Michael Phelps," said referee Ben Ekumbo of Kenya, a member of FINA's technical committee. "One was stroking (Phelps) and one was gliding (Cavic)." source
