What do a 48-year-old virgin, a pizza delivery man and a 10-year old in a tutu have in common? They’re all among the top contenders for this season of Britain’s Got Talent.
Tomorrow, celebrity judges Piers Morgan, Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden will have to choose 40 semi-finalists to compete for a spot on next Saturday’s finale.
Susan Boyle, the Scottish songstress who won hearts around the world with her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream," is the show’s obvious favorite. The YouTube clip of her Talent debut has received more than 100 million hits and has appeared on international talk shows.
"People tell me about the coverage I am getting from all over the world," she told the Daily Mail, "but the weirdest thing was when I had a gentleman turn up at my doorstep all the way from Peru. He said he'd seen my clip on YouTube and had come to congratulate me!"
At birth, Boyle was deprived of oxygen and suffered from a lifelong learning disability as a result. Singing, she said, was always "a good way of hiding behind that and boosting my confidence."
For a time following her mother’s death in 2007, Boyle gave up on singing, but soon decided to make one last grasp for stardom. "Britain's Got Talent was something my mum had wanted me to do," she said. "I wanted to prove to people that I could do it."
And she certainly has. Boyle’s fame is such that she just got a
personal bodyguard. While she might be at the center of media and
public attention, however, Boyle is among several potential winners
this year. [NYDN]
