They are both talented performers and vocalists.
They have different very different vocal styles.

Jennifer Hudson's voice is somewhat cleaner, and more subdued. She is a gifted and talented vocalist.

Jennifer Holidays voice is so expressive, and powerful, proven by the tears it has created in even the most stoic listeners. She is iconic, especially when this song is the subject. I feel her voice can be best appreciated only by watching her perform the songs as well. She transforms the piece into something that is more powerful than just a perfect vocal performance. I am not in any way minimizing Jennifer Hudson's talent. In a sentence, this comparison is like comparing apples to oranges, and asking a person who likes both fruits to explain why one is better than the other.

Experiencing art is very personal. Exceptional art can effect, touch, and change the minds of masses of people, and it can cross lines of gender, culture, race, income level, and pretty much any other quality that tends to place barriers between groups of human beings.

Jennifer Holiday does something magical, and its in the expression, emotion, and the power of her vocal delivery.

For example, I think Celine Dion is a phenomenal vocalist. Her vocal style is pure, clean, and technically spot on. However, she could not sing this song with the same effect on people that Ms. Holiday's voice could produce.

Hypothetically speaking, if I were fortunate enough to experience Jennifer Holiday perform this song as Effie in the original production, and could also be fortunate enough to experience Hudson do the same, may I dare speculate that I would be more moved by the performace of Holiday's. Seventy five years into the future, whose performance will people be watching.... Holiday's or Hudson's? This (again, this is a very individual experience) question, from my perspective, has a obvious answer: Holiday hands down.

I did not say Holiday was superior. I will say that I believe that her performance is exceptional, timeless, and global.
