The BET Hip Hop Awards were taped this weekend. The episode will air Thursday on BET. Lil Wayne was the big winner of the night. Russell Simmons was honored with a special "I Am Hip-Hop" icon award .
Not only did Weezy win top awards but he made a surprise announcement that he has a baby on the way. Congrats to Weezy. Unfortunately by the look of the stack of styrofoam cups Iin Lil Wayne's hand it appears that Weezy still hasn't kicked his pesky syrup habit.
Lil Wayne was named lyricist of the year and Russell Simmons was honored as a hip-hop icon at this year's BET Hip-Hop Awards taped on Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia.
The New Orleans, Louisiana, rapper, who was nominated for 12 awards, was also named MVP of the Year and the Alltel Wireless People's Champ at the ceremony, which was hosted by T-Pain instead of scheduled host, comedian Katt Williams.
The show featured a hip-hop matriarch medley that included MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, Salt-n-Pepa.
DJ Khaled, Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Big Boi, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe, Birdman and Rick Ross took home the award for Best Hip-Hop Collaboration for "I'm So Hood (The Remix)."
T.I. also made this year's show. The Atlanta rapper was scheduled to headline last year's ceremony, but was arrested hours before the event on federal weapons charges after he was caught trying to purchase semi-automatic guns and silencers. T.I. pleaded guilty earlier this year and is scheduled to be sentenced in March.
Atlanta factored heavily into the night's festivities, with a performance by Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy and Bow Wow. Shawty Lo was named MySpace Music Rookie of the Year.
LL Cool J presented Simmons with the "I Am Hip-Hop" Icon award, given to an individual who has made notable contributions of outstanding significance to the hip-hop community. Simmons was recognized as a philanthropic inspiration to other artists. source

"Not knowing T-Pain was an extremely DOPE break-dancer, Katt thought it was an easy win. T-Pain said if I win, I get to host the Hip-Hop Awards."
The replacement emcee wasn't the only surprise of the evening: Lil Wayne revealed he's expecting his first "Lil one" very soon, saying: "I got a son about to be born any day now." Weezy F. Baby is expecting his own baby in a couple of days. The MC made the announcement that he will father his first son at Saturday’s 2008 BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta. He shared the good news while accepting the award for Lyricist of the Year.
“I got a son dropping any day. Pray for me,” said the 26-year-old rapper.
Wayne already has a 9-year-old daughter named Reginae with his ex-wife Antonia “Toya” Johnson. source
