Filmmaker Byron Hurt who directed the Sundance documentary Beyond Beats & Rhymes sent us an email blast supporting Real Word alum Kevin Powell for Congress that we decided to share. Kevin Powell is holding a political rally and concert on September 3rd. This evening's event features live performances by old school hip hop groups Naughty by Nature, Black Sheep and KRS One.
In August, I finished working on my latest short documentary film, Barack & Curtis. It compares and contrasts Barack Obama masculinity with the masculinity of the iconic gangster rapper 50 Cent. It’s a really unique perspective on both men’s presentation of manhood, and is scheduled to hit the internet and blogoshere during the first week of October. Look to hear more about Barack & Curtis soon. if you are in the New York City/Metro area tomorrow night, (Wednesday, September 3, 2008) then please come out and support “Hip-Hop For Kevin Powell,” a rally and concert in support of Kevin Powell for Congress (see details about the event below). Come out and pack the house for Kevin’s final fundraiser before the Democratic Primary Election on Tuesday, September 9, 2008. Please help Kevin Powell unseat Ed Towns for the congressional seat representing Brooklyn, New York’s 10th Congressional district.
This was an illegal fundraiser, and Kevin Powell is not being ordered to stop fundraising activities since he never officially filed to be a Congressional Candidate with the Federal election Commission (FEC). They even sent him one of their cease and desist letters:

Powell's Response? "No comment" to repeated requests for clarification.

Anyone who participated in the event may have broken election law and may be subject to prosecution, so I suggest you check with the campaign pronto.
