Fighting an injured left knee, an erratic swing and series of terrible starts, Woods still managed to produce some of the most memorable moments of his mythic career at Torrey Pines. There were the two back nine eagles on Saturday; a front-nine 30 on Friday; and his Sunday birdie on 18 to force the playoff in the first place. Woods's performance Monday, by comparison, wasn't quite as dramatic, but, as always, just as effective. After surrendering a three-shot lead on the back nine, he caught Mediate with another birdie on 18 then put him away with a professional par on 461-yard par-four seventh for the 14th major of his career. His fans are also going to have remember this one for a while as it appears he won't be playing again in the immediate future. "I'm glad I'm done," Woods said afterward. "I really didn't feel like playing anymore. The atmosphere kept me going. I couldn't have quit on these people." Woods's knee continues to be the subject of considerable speculation and, after Monday's round, he allowed that doctors had told him he risked further injury by playing in the Open. He said he wouldn't be playing "for a while", which brings the British Open into question. He also added the knee was bothering him as intently on Monday as it had during the previous four rounds. Tiger Woods finally beat Rocco Mediate on the 91st hole of the U.S. Open on Monday, ending an instant-classic major championship with a par at the 19th hole of a playoff.

Woods made a birdie to send the scheduled 18-hole playoff into sudden-death, then needed only a routine par at the next hole after Mediate bounced a bunker shot off the cart path and against the bleachers.

It brought to an end one of the longest U.S. Opens in history, a tournament whose first four rounds played out in primetime on the East Coast. Millions watched one of Woods' most compelling victories. Many of them got their first look at Mediate.
